Opinel No.9 Stainless Steel

Blade Material

Hardness 55-57 HRC. European origin. OPINEL optimizes the stainless steel in the No.9 knife blade to ensure high corrosion resistance and strong mechanical performance. The blade offers excellent sharpness and high resistance to abrasion (wear) which allows it to withstand regular contact with hard materials, such as ceramics, before requiring re-sharpening. Stainless steel has the advantage of requiring no special maintenance under ordinary conditions of use, unlike carbon steel. Prolonged exposure to aggressive environments (such as acids, salt water, or detergents) can push the steel to its performance limits and corrosion resistance.

Shape

The classic Opinel blade has adopted a Yatagan shape. Inspired by a traditional Turkish saber, the Yatagan shape is the toe up. The blade is ground to an exclusive convex profile. This ensures the strength of the blade and allows efficient regrinding.

Handle

Opinel uses beech as the most common wood for its knife handles. PEFC-certified, the wood comes from eco-managed farms in the Jura and Vercors regions. Beech wood is hard, resistant and easy to work. It is homogeneous in appearance, with a light color ranging from yellow to pink. It can be recognized by the presence of numerous small dark lines. Tinted varnish protects the handle from moisture and dirt.

Lock

Marcel Opinel invented the Virobloc safety ring in 1955, and Opinel fits it to all folding knives from the N°06 upward. Cut out of stainless steel, the Virobloc has two sections, one fixed and one sliding.  In addition to locking the blade open (safety in use), additionally, it is now possible to lock the blade closed (safety in transport).
