The traditional Opinel blade is called Yatagan blade. Its shape is inspired by a Turkish sword, with raised tip. The blade is ground according to an exclusive curved profile that guarantees the robustness of the blade and allows efficient resharpening.
Beech is the most used wood for the manufacture of Opinel sleeves. From French farms, it is hard, resistant and easy to work with. Of a homogeneous appearance, its light color varies from yellow to pink. It is recognizable by the presence of many small dark features. The handle is varnished to be better protected against moisture and dirt.
Safety Ring invented in 1955 by Marcel Opinel, the Virobloc safety ring equips all closing knives from the N°06. Cut from stainless steel, the Virobloc consists of two parts: a fixed part and a sliding part. In addition to locking the blade in the open position (safety of use), it is now possible to lock the blade in the closed position (safety of transport).
Hardness 55-57 HRC. Origin Europe.
The stainless steel of OPINEL blades is an optimized grade to guarantee both high corrosion resistance and high mechanical performance.
The blade offers a excellent sharp and one high resistance to abrasion (wear) which allows it to face regular contact with hard materials, such as ceramics, before requiring re-sharpening. Stainless steel has the advantage of not requiring no special maintenance under ordinary use conditions unlike carbon steel. Nevertheless, it can meet its limits when it is put in prolonged contact with an aggressive atmosphere (acid, salt water, detergent …).
